THE INTERPLAY OF PARTICIPATING IN ENGLISH COMPETITION AND SPEAKING SKILL DEVELOPMENT: A NARRATIVE INQUIRY
Abstract
This study explores the impact of participating in English language competitions on the development of speaking skills among EFL (English as a Foreign Language) university students in Indonesia. Employing a narrative inquiry approach, the research investigates two students’ lifelong experiences engaging in public speaking contests, highlighting the emotional, cognitive, and social dimensions of their learning journeys. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and analyzed using thematic coding aligned with narrative structures. Findings reveal that sustained participation in competitions enhances not only fluency and accuracy in spoken English but also bolsters self-confidence, time management, and critical thinking. Competitions function as transformative spaces for language learning beyond the classroom, fostering resilience and intrinsic motivation. The study underscores the pedagogical value of integrating competitive speaking activities into language curricula and advocates for greater institutional support to cultivate students’ communicative competence.
