THE CORRELATION BETWEEN STUDENTS' SPEAKING SELF-EFFICACY AND THEIR SPEAKING ABILITY AT SPEAKING CLASS

Abstract


Abstract : English speaking is quite difficult for many foreign language learners because there are many factor that affect their speaking ability. The purpose of this research is to determine the correlation between self-efficacy and speaking ability of 85 students in English Education Department at University of Islam Malang. This research is a quantitative research with correlational design. Through questionnaire and speaking score, this research attempts to answer two research questions: (1) students’ level of self-efficacy, speaking ability, and (2) the correlation between students’ speaking self-efficacy and their speaking ability. To analyze the data, descriptive analysis and Pearson correlation by SPSS 20 was used in this research. The result of descriptive analysis in self-efficacy showed that students’ level belonged to moderate category with a mean score of 92.51. On speaking ability, the students’ level belonged to the good category with a mean score of 70.85. Then, a positive and significant correlation was found in self-efficacy and speaking ability with a sig.value of 0.000 which was smaller than 0.05 (0.000<0.05). From the data analysis, it can be concluded that students’ level in self-efficacy classified as moderate, in speaking ability classified as high, and there was a positive and significant correlation between students’ speaking self-efficacy and their speaking ability.
