STUDENTS' ANXIETY IN SPEAKING ENGLISH : A CASE STUDY AT ENGLISH DEPARTMENT OF UNISMA

Abstract

Abstract : This article aims to know what factors may contribute to students’
anxiety in speaking English and how the lecturers support and motivate
the students in solving their anxiety in speaking English. The research design in this study is qualitative method with case study approach. The subject of this research is 1 female and 1 male English student with the highest anxiety in the 3rd semester of the academic year 2021/2022 at UNISMA. The data were gathered through structed interviews and questionnaire.The result of the study showed that limited vocabulary, students’ belief about English language, ridiculed by peers, lack of preparation, less confidence, speaking in front of the class, incomprehensible input, and teacher personality were the eight factors that may contribute to the students’ anxiety in speaking English. Moreover there are three methods employed by the lecturers to support and motivate the students in solving their anxiety in speaking English such as : applying mix language (code mixing and switching) in speaking class, mirror talk method, giving new vocabulary in every meeting and increasing vocabulary through movie.
