Abstract

This study examines muzakki’s perceptions, motivations, and practices of zakat compliance, focusing on preferences for direct distribution to mustahik. Using a qualitative phenomenological approach, semi-structured interviews were conducted with nine muzakki. The findings show that zakat compliance is relatively high, primarily driven by religiosity and the belief that zakat purifies wealth and brings blessings. Most respondents pay zakat voluntarily after fulfilling nisab and haul requirements. Direct distribution is preferred, especially to family, neighbors, and close communities, in line with Islamic teachings that prioritize relatives. However, concerns regarding transparency and accountability were identified, leading to dissatisfaction with government zakat institutions. This study is limited to a small sample in one city, restricting generalizability. Future research may include comparative or quantitative studies. Improving transparency and coordination in zakat institutions is essential to rebuild public trust and strengthen social solidarity.
