Abstract

Nowadays, the depleting biomass is often used as the main fuel source of energy in everyday life. One of the biomass that is correlated with this research is coal, coal is a fossil fuel used for combustion. The alternative fuel that will be used in this study is wood pellets. Wood pellets are the latest innovation to reduce coal use, using 2 compositions, namely apus bamboo powder and sengon wood powder. The purpose of this study was to determine the burning characteristics of sengon-bamboo apus wood pellets using the single wood pellet method. The research method used is experimental. Variations on wood pellets using sengon wood to which apus bamboo will be added by 0%, 10%, 20%, 30%. The length of the wood pellet is 2 cm with a diameter of 0.8 cm. Ignition of wood pellets uses a match as fuel for ignition in a connector connected to LPG. There is a thermocouple that is placedsatsasdistancesof 0.5 cmsabove the wood pellet which has been tied to a support.

Thesresultssshowedsthatsthe burning temperature ofswood pellets would be higher if the ash content in the wood pellet composition was low, this was because the low ash content affected the higher combustile matter content resulting in a high calorific value. The high calorific value also causes the burning time to be higher, this is due to the low combustion rate. The low burning rate is affected by the volatile matter content, the higher the volatile matter, the lower the bound carbon content, because the high carbon content affects the heating value. The high calorific value improves the quality of the wood pellets.
