THE USE OF SONG LYRICS TO INCREASE STUDENTS’ UNDERSTANDING ON SIMPLE PAST TENSE

Abstract
The objective of this research was to increase students' understanding
on simple past tense using song lyrics at the first grade of SMP Wahid Hasyim Malang. This reserch used a classroom action research design. The research was conducted from 16th November to 23th November 2018. It was carried out in one cycle consisted of two meetings for implementing the action and one meeting for the test. The subject of the research was the first grade of SMP Wahid Hasyim Malang, it involved 25 students in one class of 7C the academic year 2018/2019.
The reason of researcher took this research because of raised some problems were found on learning English subject of the first grade students at SMP Wahid Hasyim Malang, the problems were: (1) the students often did not want to practice English in the class; (2) the students were passive in the classroom because they had low motivation in learning English, and (3) Based on the test, students’ got score was 65 whereas the KKM of that school is 75.
To solve the problems researcher used song lyrics as learning and teaching media, and the result of the research showed that by using song lyrics in teaching simple past tense at the first grade of SMP Wahid Hasyim Malang were able to increase students’ understanding. It could be seen from the result of students average score and good responses by students. Students mean score of the test increased from 65 to 75. It means that there was significant improve on students’ understanding on simple past tense using song lyrics at the first grade of SMP Wahid Hasyim Malang. The researcher suggested for the teacher to use the media in their classroom and the teacher could implemented song lyrics on different grades and levels of education.
