Investigating The English Speaking Strategy by The Students With Mental Health Problem
Abstract
Speaking is an important skill that students must have, by having a good skill in speaking it can be easier for students to communicate in academic context although in social environment. Meanwhile, students who have their own worries and feeling of anxious in the class although outside academic settings, one of them who have Mental Health problem.
This study aimed to find out the English speaking strategy that students use by the students with mental health problem. In fact that students with mental health problem usually faced several obstacle or challlenges in speaking skill, especially in the context of EFL in the class. The research design use descriptive qualitative with two participants who were choosen by purposive sampling technique, which involved choosing criteria who have specific related to the study, students who have mental health problem especially in anxiety and mental health problem before speaking english in academic context and were willing to share their experience. Data were collected through semi structured interview models as the instrument and the data analized by thematic analysis. The participants are EFL students at the University of Islam Malang in the academic year 2021. The researcher took two the participants who have experience in Mental Health problem.
The findings of this study showed that both of the participants use srategies such as self monitoring, preparation, and use self talk, self heal to overcome the speaking obstacles. These strategy helps both of participants to developing self confident and fluency in speaking English. Based on the finding of the study, it can be concluded that this study suggest psychological support and learning strategy running simultaneously, so that the educators, EFL students and future researchers, to develop supportive and inclusive learning environment.
