AN ANALYSIS OF STUDENTS’ GRAMMATICAL ERROR IN WRITING RECOUNT TEXT

Abstract


Abstract : Writing English is a challenge for Indonesian students who perceive English as a foreign language. This struggle occurs because there are differences in English grammar and Indonesian, Thus, Errors are often made in writing. This research aims at finding out the types of error and identify the frequency of each type of errors that often made by tenth grade students of MA Mirqotul Ulum Probolinggo when they write recount texts. This research employed a descriptive qualitative method. The subjects in this study were 25 students of class X A students of MA Mirqotul Ulum Probolinggo. In collecting the data, the researcher used was writing test to the students. From the results of data analysis, it was found that verb tense has the highest error frequency (27.2%), Capitalization comes in second with 63 errors, or 24.8%, with 41 mistakes, or 16.1% the word choice was rated third. Punctuation comes in fourth place with 34 mistakes, or 13.4%. Spelling came in fifth place with 16 mistakes, or 6.3%. Additionally, Word order has a minimum error of five errors, or 2.0%.
