Abstract

EFL students are increasingly using online platforms like Google Meet to enhance their English speaking skills. However, these students face challenges such as limited access to learning resources and difficulty in developing their speaking abilities. Professional language instructors are crucial in ensuring fluency and mastery of speaking skills, as they are directly observed and recognized by others.

This research was conducted to find out the problems and solutions faced by students of MTs Al Ma’arif Malang while speaking English through Google Meet. This study used a natural environment and mixed methods where the questionnaire is for quantitative and interviews for qualitative. The subjects of this study were in a small class of 10 students from grade 7th for the questionnaire as information in the form of data from respondents. Then, the researcher used 4 students from grade 7th who were randomly selected for interview samples as information in the form of questions to respondents, and recordings with screen video recordings. Data reduction, data display, and drawing conclusions/verification are the data analysis used in this research.

The results of the first question of this research were to reveal EFL students' speaking problems by using four dominant factors in the questionnaire, namely student's affective problems, instructor and students' social, educational and facilities system, linguistically and then five questions for the interview. Furthermore, the research results on the second question using the last question in the interview revealed students' solutions when speaking English through online platforms. EFL learners often face speaking difficulties due to linguistic issues like lack of vocabulary, fluency, and pronunciation. These issues can lead to anxiety, shyness, and lack of confidence. In online learning, unstable network connections hinder the smooth learning process, making Google Meet ineffective. Online learning also reduces face-to-face interaction, hindering improvement. To overcome these challenges, students should focus on increasing vocabulary and spelling pronunciation through conversations with family or friends, using Google Meet and Google Translate, and finding suitable providers or networks.

This research can be continued by further researchers by involving more participants which cannot be generalized in this study. Future research can compare the speaking problems experienced by MTs Al Ma'arif Malang students when speaking English. So, future researchers can find out better solutions to use in dealing with students' speaking skill problems when speaking English.
