Abstract

Abstract: Vocabulary is essential in all aspects of language learning. Therefore, expanding vocabulary mastery is an important part of learning English. Technology is around our daily lives. Technology facilitates teaching and knowledge with various applications, one of which is using YouTube media. Students should be selective in using YouTube by choosing videos related to learning English to improve their vocabulary. This study aims to determine students' perceptions and benefits of using YouTube to learn English, especially in improving their vocabulary. The findings of this study will make a substantial contribution to understanding the benefits of YouTube in the English learning process. This study was conducted using a descriptive qualitative method involving three second-semester English students at the Private University in Malang because they often learn English through YouTube to improve their English vocabulary mastery. The instruments used in this study were semi-structured interviews and documents. The researcher used direct with two students and online interviews using the Zoom application with one student. The researcher also used document analysis in the form of screenshots from students as evidence of data accuracy. Based on the results of the study, all students gave a positive response to the existence of YouTube as a means of learning English. Each student thinks that YouTube can help them learn English vocabulary in an interesting and memorable way. Several factors also encourage the effectiveness of vocabulary mastery learning through YouTube such as English video content accompanied by subtitles, visual displays, learning strategies, motivation, and learning styles. This can make students improve and understand their mastery of formal and informal English vocabulary such as slang, idioms, and various expressions. Researchers hope that students can improve their English vocabulary mastery more effectively. Also, teachers can apply various interesting and interactive learning strategies to help students learn English vocabulary using YouTube. The results of this study are also expected to provide additional information for further researchers and it is recommended to use an experimental design.
