Abstract

This study investigates speaking anxiety during teaching practice in a unique cultural context of an Islamic educational institution experienced by EFL student teachers. The study aims to understand the sources of speaking anxiety and the strategies used to overcome it. The study used a qualitative narrative inquiry design, involving in-depth interviews with four EFL student teachers in an Islamic junior high school in Indonesia. Thematic analysis revealed six sources of speaking anxiety: classroom interaction, teaching materials, initial practicum experiences, classroom management, speaking ability, and the Islamic educational institution. Four strategies for managing anxiety were identified: thorough preparation for practice, seeking social support, self-management, and using effective teaching strategies. This research fills a critical gap by focusing on Islamic educational institution-specific challenges and coping mechanisms, providing invaluable insights for EFL student-teachers, educators and policymakers to enhance EFL teaching practices in similar cultural contexts.
