MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS’ FOREIGN LANGUAGE ANXIETY AND THEIR LANGUAGE ACHIEVEMENT

Fitri Widyasari

Abstract

Abstract : This quantitative study aims at investigating middle school students’ foreign language anxiety level, discovering the FLA types that frequently most experienced by the students, and investigating the correlation between the students’ FLA level and their language achievement. The study used 34 of 8th grader students as the sample. Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS) by Horwitz et al. (1986) and the documentation of students’ English overall scores throughout the year were the instrument of the study. The first and the second research questions were answered using descriptive statistics, while the third research objective was analyzed using inferential statistics in form of Pearson correlation. The findings showed that the mean scores of the students’ FLA level was (M = 98.06) which was classified as mildly anxious. The means scores of the Communication Apprehension was (M = 32.18), Test Anxiety (M = 43.03), and Fer of Negative Evaluation (M = 22.85) which can be concluded that Test Anxiety was the most frequently type of FLA experienced by the students. The correlation between the students’ FLA and their language achievement is represented by the result of r (34) = -.548, p < 0.01 which means that there is a significant negative strong relationship between the two variables.
