Analyzing the Difficulties Encountered by Non-English Department Students in Reading Comprehension Sections of TEP (Test of English Proficiency)

Abstract


Abstract: The aim of this study is to investigate students’ difficulties and the strategies in reading comprehension section of TEP test (test of English proficiency). The data was gained by descriptive qualitative using questionnaire. The participant of this research are eight semester of Mathematics Education Department of University of Islam Malang. Questionnaire used to collect the data. The questionnaire used was adopted from ( Wutshisingchai, 2011)  and       ( Samad, et.al, 2017). The questionnaires were translated to Indonesia language to avoiding misunderstanding and misinterpretation. The data was analyzed using data triangulation. From the data identification, students found the categories of difficulties in TEP test (Test of English Proficiency) in reading section. The difficulties that encountered were the difficulties related to language knowledge, difficulties related to reading comprehension process and the difficulties related to the lack of reading strategies. Fortunately, there were four strategies used by non-English students to overcome their difficulties by using key word to search for main idea, strategy for identifying the purpose in reading, strategy skimming the text and the strategy repeat reading text to increase their understanding.
