Abstract

This study examines the perceptions of the Dusun Tabon Desa Bades community regarding the tradition of weton calculations in marriage, a Javanese custom used to determine the compatibility of prospective spouses. Preliminary observations revealed that this tradition is often misunderstood, potentially approaching practices considered shirk (associating partners with Allah). The research aims to describe the views of religious leaders, customary figures, and Muslim community members on weton compatibility in marriage. A qualitative ethnographic approach was employed, utilizing techniques such as observation, interviews, and documentation. Findings indicate that religious leaders view weton calculations as valid if used as an effort for mindfulness, while customary figures see it as a mental tool to address potential mismatches with specific remedies. Muslim community members regard weton as an additional effort rather than a primary measure of marital happiness. The study concludes that religious and customary leaders should provide appropriate guidance to ensure the tradition is respected without violating religious principles. Recommendations include educating the community on proper handling of the tradition and aligning customary guidance with religious teachings.
