Pengaruh Kendali Glukosa terhadap Kadar Kromium pada Penderita Diabetes Melitus Tipe 2 di Malang

Abstract

Background:Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a degenerative chronic disease characterized by an increase of blood glucose concentrations above normal (hyperglycemia). Subsequently, it causes a decrease of chromium serum level. Chromium is an essential micronutrient which it has roles to increase insulin sensitivity and improves glucose metabolism. Thus, it is important in the regulation of blood glucose level. This study aimed to define the effect of blood glucose regulation on chromium serum level in type 2 DM patients in Malang.

Method: This study analytical cross sectional study evaluated the chromium serum concentration of type 2 DM patient with age over 40 years old who has no history of type 2 DM-related complications. Samples were divided into two groups; controlled glucose group (CG) and uncontrolled glucose group (UCG). The chromium serum level was examined with Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS). Data was analyzed using independent T-Test followed by Pearson correlation test. Data was considered significant at p <0.05.

Result:  Chromium serum levels in patients with type 2 DM; controlled and uncontrolled blood glucose was 9.1±1.64 and 9.55±1.29 µg/L, respectively.  CG has lower chromium serum level than UCG, but insignificantly (p 0.345). The correlation test between those groups showed a correlation value of r 0.352 with p 0.026. This means that blood glucose control has no role in serum chromium level in type 2 DM patients in Malang.

Conclusion: This study showed that there was no relationship between blood glucose regulation and chromium serum level in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients in Malang.
