STRATEGI METODE SOROGAN DALAM PEMBELAJARAN KITAB KUNING DI PONDOK PESANTREN PPAI DARUN NAJAH NGIJO KARANGPLOSO

Abstract

Islamic boarding schools continue to preserve the sorogan method as a traditional approach to teaching classical Islamic texts (kitab kuning). However, differences in students' learning abilities and the implementation of this method create challenges in achieving effective learning outcomes. This study aims to analyze students' ability to master kitab kuning, describe the implementation strategy of the sorogan method, and identify the supporting and inhibiting factors in its application at Pondok Pesantren PPAI Darun Najah Ngijo Karangploso. This research employed a qualitative approach with a descriptive case study design. Data were collected through observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentation involving Islamic boarding school administrators, teachers (ustadz), and students. The data were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman interactive model, including data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing, while data credibility was ensured through triangulation. The findings reveal that the sorogan method effectively improves students' competence in reading, understanding, and interpreting kitab kuning through individualized learning supported by bandongan, memorization, lalaran, and compulsory study sessions. The implementation is strengthened by competent teachers, a supportive boarding school environment, and students' discipline, whereas differences in prior knowledge, learning motivation, and limited instructional time remain the primary obstacles. These findings demonstrate that the sorogan method remains an effective pedagogical strategy for preserving and strengthening classical Islamic learning in contemporary pesantren education.
