PENERAPAN PENDEKATAN DEEP LEARNING DALAM MENINGKATKAN MINAT BELAJAR PAI DI SMA BRAWIJAYA SMART SCHOOL MALANG

Abstract

Instruction in Islamic Religious Education (PAI) that remains focused on memorization often fails to cultivate students' deep understanding and sustained learning interest, raising the question of how a deep learning approach can be applied to strengthen engagement. This study examines the application of the deep learning approach in PAI instruction at SMA Brawijaya Smart School Malang, describes students' responses to the approach, and identifies the supporting and inhibiting factors of its implementation. Using a qualitative case study design, data were collected through participatory observation in grade XI, in-depth interviews with the PAI teacher, the vice-principal, and students, and documentation, then analyzed with the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña. Findings show the approach was implemented through three interrelated components—meaningful, mindful, and joyful learning—realized through contextual analysis, mindfulness practices, role play, and creative, enjoyable activities. Students responded positively, becoming more enthusiastic and active, with a consistent rise in learning interest as the material felt more relevant to real life. Adequate technological facilities, management support, and strong teacher–student communication supported implementation, while heterogeneous student characters and limited time for complex methods were the main obstacles, addressed through personal approaches and varied teaching methods.
