PERAN GURU AGAMA DALAM MENUMBUHKAN KESADARAN SISWA TERHADAP KEBERSIHAN LINGKUNGAN SEKOLAH DI SMA ISLAM NUSANTARA KOTA MALANG

Abstract

This study aims to describe the role of Islamic Religion teachers in fostering students’ awareness of school environmental cleanliness. A clean school environment is essential for creating a comfortable, healthy, and conducive learning atmosphere. However, many students still lack concern for cleanliness despite the availability of supporting facilities. This research emphasizes the strategic role of Islamic Religion Education (PAI) teachers, as cleanliness in Islam is viewed as part of faith and moral responsibility. Using a qualitative descriptive case study approach, data were collected through observation, interviews with teachers and students, and documentation at SMA Islam Nusantara Malang. The findings show that Islamic Religion teachers play a vital role through three main strategies: (1) habituation, by involving students in routine cleaning programs such as class duties and Jumat Bersih; (2) exemplary behavior, by demonstrating personal and environmental cleanliness; and (3) motivation, by linking cleanliness to Islamic values. Supporting factors include adequate school facilities and teacher collaboration, while inhibiting factors involve students’ low awareness, external influences, and limited teacher time. Overall, Islamic Religion teachers contribute significantly as educators, motivators, and role models in building students’ awareness and fostering a clean and religious school culture.
