Designing Supplementary Speaking Materials for an English Extracurricular Program of Junior High School Students

Abstract


The present study aims to design supplementary speaking materials for an English extracurricular program of Junior High School students. An unavailable textbook for the English extracurricular class becomes the problem faced for both the teacher and the students. This study used Research and Development (R&D) method adopted from Borg & Gall (2003). Some procedures involved in this study were need analysis, designing syllabus and English extracurricular product, validating the product to the experts, doing revision, trying out the product, and final product. The final product of this research is an English-speaking book entitled “Let’s Practice English, speaking skill”. It focused on enhancing the students’ speaking skill and preparing them to join English competition. This product was designed based on the students’ needs and interests. Specifically, this product was completed with several tips and tricks for English competition, some dialogues, English games, and mini vocabulary to enrich the students’ vocabulary and to help them understand the content. Last, the final result of this research showed that the students were interested in practicing to speak English and have enthusiasts in following English competition.
