Developing an English Reading Material for Tenth Grade Student of Multimedia Study Program In SMK Sabilillah Pasuruan

Abstract


In teaching English for vocational high school students of multimedia in SMK Sabilillah Pasuruan especially for reading, the material development becomes one of factors in the success of teaching and learning activities in the classroom. It is because the material development contains ESP. In the other hand the availability of the book which provides the materials relating to the major is still needed. The teacher still gets difficulty in finding the book with the material development relating to Multimedia (ESP book). This is one the problems that the researcher find in SMK Sabilillah Pasuruan. It also becomes the basic for the researcher to develop the reading materials for vocational high school students of multimedia study program.

This study focuses on the developing an English reading material which is specified to the students of multimedia in SMK Sabilillah Pasuruan. It was used to require the students’ need and interest. It was conducted by using the Research and Development (R & D) design where the developed material was started by the need assessment. After that the developed material was validated by the experts. Then it was revised for several parts before it was field tested to the tenth grade students in the school. It was aimed to know the effectiveness and the appropriateness of the book.

The data was collected by using several instruments namely questionnaires, interviews, checklist and observation. The questionnaires were given to the students and the English teacher in the process of need assessment. Meanwhile, the checklists were given to the experts on the process of product validation. The observation and the other questionnaire were given in the process of field testing.

After all steps of material development were conducted, the final product was field tested. All collected data were analyzed and it could be concluded that the material development could be applied for the students of multimedia about the effectiveness and the appropriateness. The content of the material development provided students the appropriate knowledge and interested material which was relevant to the major.
