Abstract

This study aims to describe the teacher’s strategies in teaching Jawi (Pegon) to firstgrade students at Madrasah Uthmaniah ABIM Malaysia and to identify the implementation outcomes of these strategies in improving students’ basic literacy skills. The study employed a qualitative approach with a case study design. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation involving the teacher and first-grade students as research participants. Data analysis was conducted using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña, including data collection, data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing, while data validity was ensured through source triangulation and technique triangulation. The findings indicate that the teacher implements differentiated and step-by-step learning strategies, starting from recognizing Jawi letters, combining letters into syllables, and progressing to reading and writing simple words, supported by the use of visual and audio learning media such as letter cards, posters, worksheets, educational songs, and writing demonstrations, as well as various teaching methods including guided reading, question and answer sessions, educational games, and group activities. The results show that the implementation of these strategies positively impacts students’ ability to recognize, read, and write Jawi (Pegon), as well as increases their motivation, participation, and self-confidence in learning activities, although some students still require additional guidance due to differences in initial abilities; overall, the strategies contribute significantly to improving students’ early literacy skills and creating meaningful and interactive learning experiences.
