Abstract

ABSTRACT
Rice (Oryza sativa L.) Is one of Indonesia’s primary staple food crops, and increasing its productivity requires sustainable soil management strategies. Fresh cattle manure is widely applied by farmers because it is readily available and inexpensive; however, its direct application may lead to nutrient immobilization and unstable decomposition processes. Biochar has been widely recognized as a soil amendment capable of improving soil chemical properties and providing favorable habitats for soil microorganisms. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of biochar combined with fresh cattle manure on total soil bacterial population and vegetative growth of rice (Oryza sativa L) cv. Inpari 32. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse using a Randomized Block Design consisting of five treatments and four replications: control (O), fresh cattle manure (K), biochar (B), biochar + half-dose fresh cattle manure (C), and half-dose biochar + fresh cattle manure (D). Observed variables included total soil bacterial population, plant height, leaf number, leaf area, tiller number, fresh biomass, and dry biomass. Data were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA), followed by the Least Significant Difference (LSD) test at the 5% siginificance level. The results showed that the application of biochar and fresh cattle manure did not significantly affect total soil bacterial population or tiller number. In contrast, significant responses were observed in plant height, leaf number, leaf area, fresh weight, and dry weight during the vegetative growth stage. These findings indicate that the combination of biochar and fresh cattle manure primarily influenced vegetative growth responses, while changes in total soil bacterial population were not detected under the experimental conditions.
