Abstract


ABSTRACT

Introduction Cadmium is a dangerous heavy metal because it can pollute air, water and soil. Cadmium compounds are more soluble in water compared to other metals and have a negative impact on life in the aquatic environment, especiallyfor fish. Cadmium accumulates most in the liver, kidneys, gills, and muscle tissue of fish. This study aims to determine the effect of chronic exposure to CdCl2 on swimming speed and necrosis of zebra fish (Danio rerio) hepatocytes from the juvenile to the adult phase.

Methods The three month juvenile D.rerio phase was divided into four treatment groups: the control group, the exposure group with CdCl2 doses of 0.5, 1, and 1.5 ppm for thirty days. Swimming speed was observed using Tracker software version 5.1.2, while hepatocyte necrosis using Haematoxylin and eosin (HE) staining of liver tissue was observed using a microscope with 1000 times magnification. Data were analyzed using One Way ANOVA with significance (p<0,05).

Results Comparison of chronic exposure to CdCl2 at doses of 0.5, 1, and 1.5 ppm significantly reduced the swimming speed of D.rerio with p value 0,000. Similarly, chronic exposure to CdCl2 (0.5, 1, and 1.5 ppm) significantly increases the number of hepatocyte necrosis in D.rerio with p value 0,000.

Conclusion Chronic exposure of CdCl2 at 0.5 ppm, 1 ppm, and 1.5 ppm can reduce swimming speed and increase the number of adult D.rerio hepatocyte necrosis.
