Abstract

Background: Water hyacinth (Eichornia crassipes) is a water phytoremediator due to heavy metals and is also one of the sources of plants that have antioxidant compounds and the ability to Pb-related contaminants. Water hyacinth in the Lawang and Pasuruan regions was thought to have high Pb levels which could affect the high antioxidant activity.

Methods: This research was conducted to test the level of Pb and antioxidant activity as Eichornia crassipes root extract was taken from of Indrokilo Lawang Malang and Cangkringmalang Beji Pasuruan. The assay Pb was measured by atomic absorption spectrophotometry (AAS) at a maximum wavelength of 283.43 nm. The antioxidant activity test was using 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) method and their result was check using by Uv-Vis  spectrophotometry (517 nm wavelength).

Results: The average Pb content of the Eichornia crassipes  root extract in Lawang 0,4711±0,0051ppm and 0,7253±0,1583 ppmin Pasuruan (p>0.05).Antioxidant activity of the water hyacinth root of Lawang Malang is higher than of Pasuruan (p<0.05).

Conclusion: Comparison of the Eichornia crassipes root extract in Lawang and Pasuruan did not show any difference in Pb levels but there were significant differences in antioxidant activity and there is a correlation between high Pb levels and antioxidant activity.
