PENENTUAN KADAR KADMIUMDAN ANTIOKSIDAN PADA EKSTRAK ETIL ASETAT AKAR ECENG GONDOK (Eichornia crassipes) DI DAERAH LAWANG DAN PASURUAN
Abstract
Introduction: Large amount of cadmium compounds in the environment causes high exposure of cadmium to humans which leads to failure of synthesizing antioxidant compounds such as catalase and GSH, resulting in depletion of antioxidant levels in the body. Exogeneous antioxidant from plants can resolve this problem. Water hyacinth is known to have the ability to bind cadmium and has strong antioxidants, high pollution can affect the antioxidant levels of water hyacinth roots. In this study, water hyacinth will be taken in Lawang which representing areas that are low in pollution and Pasuruan areas that are high in pollution. The aim of this study was to determine the levels of cadmium and antioxidant activity in the ethyl acetate extract of water hyacinth roots in Bedali Village, Lawang District, Malang Regency and Cangkringmalang Village, Beji District, Pasuruan Regency.
Method: This is an in vitro laboratory experiments. The water hyacinth roots of Lawang and Pasuruan regions was taken by purposive sampling method. Extraction of water hyacinth root used maceration method with ethyl acetate solvent for 24 hours. Determination of cadmium level in ethyl acetate extract of water hyacinth root used atomic absorption spectrophotometer (AAS) at λ of 228,8 nm. Test of antioxidant activity in water hyacinth root extract used the DPPH method at λ of 517 nm. Data was analyzed with independent sample T test with p < 0,05.
Results: The levels of cadmium heavy metals in the water hyacinth root extract in Lawang and Pasuruan areas were not detected. The water hyacinth root of the Pasuruan area of various concentrations has a higher percentage of antioxidant activity than the Lawang area.
Conclusion: The water hyacinth roots of Lawang and Pasuruan are free of cadmium metal. The activity of the water hyacinth root in Pasuruan region has a stronger antioxidant activity than the extract of the water hyacinth root in the Lawang region.
