PENGARUH KOMBINASI DEKOKTA Zingiber officinale var rubrum DAN Imperata cylindrica TERHADAP KADAR SERUM TGF - β DARI TIKUS OSTEOARTRITIS YANG DIINDUKSI COMPLETE FREUND’S ADJUVANT
Abstract
Introduction: Osteoarthritis (OA) is inflammation of the joints caused by degradation of the bone without enough compensation of cartilage synthesis, resulting in bone structure changes. Currently there is no medicine that can cure OA. The rhizome of red ginger and cogon grass (RRGCG) have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Red ginger is believed to have compounds that can increase TGF-b levels, meanwhile cogon grass can supress free radicals. In this study we will report the effects of these two herbs combination on OA rats through TGF-b examination.
Method: In vivo study, using control group post-test only design. Samples used were male 4-months old wistar (Rattus novergicus) rats. 25 animals were divided into 5 groups, namely negative control (KN), positive control (KP), treatment group 1 (P1), treatment group 2 (P2), and treatment group 3 (P3). Rats were made an OA model by induction of Complete Freund's Adjuvant (CFA) which was injected intraarticularly (IA) in the rats’ right knees. Furthermore, RJMA decocta was given once a day orally for 10 days in P1 (9+40) mg/day, P2 (18+40) mg/day, P3 (36+40) mg/day. TGF-b was examined using TGF-b ELISA Assay Kit. Data were analyzed by One Way Anova test followed by post hoc test (p <0.05).
Results: The combination of RRGCG decocta could statistically increase the levels of TGF-b serum in treatment group 1 (0,53+0,00) ng/ml but was not significant (p>0,05). The levels of TGF-b serum decreased in treatmen group 2 (0,53+0,00) ng/ml and treatment group 3(0,53+0,00) ng/ml which are equally not significant.
Conclusion: The combination of RRGCG decocta could not increase the levels of TGF-b serum.
