Abstract

Introduction: High amount of vehicle-related transportation in Indonesia causes high air pollution and results inincreasing exhaust gas emissions. Cadmium is one of the metals contained in vehicle fumes. Itdistributes systemically in the human body through inhalation pathway. Consequently,it is absorbed in the bloodstream and reachrenal system. Thus, this study aimed to determine the relationship between cadmium serum level of bus station parking workers and their renal function by measuring ureum and creatinine levels.

Method: This observational analytic study used cross sectional study. Respondences are Arjosari’s bus station parking workers who have been exposured by vehicle fume. The selection of respondents were used a purposive sampling technique. Data collection of respondence characteristic were using questionnaires.Theidentification of cadmium serum level was using AAS (Atomic Absorbtion Spectrophotometer) and examination of serum urea and creatinine levels were using Uv-Vis Spectrophotometer (546 nm).

Results: The average cadmium serum value of ELG1 (Exposure Length Group <10 years) and ELG2 (Exposure Length Group> 10 years) were 23.64 and 25.82 µg / L,respectively. The ureum level was 24.11 + 4.27 mg/dL(ELG1)and 23.18 + 5.14 mg/dL(ELG2). There were no significant data both in ELG1 and ELG2 in the relationship between cadmium serum and ureum level (p>0.05).Theaverage ofcreatinine level of ELG1 and ELG2 were 1.10 + 0.20and 1.04 + 0.09mg/dL, respectively. There were no significant data both in ELG1 and ELG2 in the relationship between cadmium serum and creatinine level (p>0.05).

Conclusion: Cadmiumserum level of Arjosari parking workers were not correlated with their renal function

Keywords: cadmium serum, renal function, transportation workers
