Abstract

Population growth, community activities, and transportation developments increase traffic flow, especially at intersections. The imbalance between the number of vehicles and infrastructure causes congestion, long queues and reduced road performance, which has negative impacts on time, the economy and the environment. Road performance studies are important for traffic planning and management. Intersections, as critical points, need to be managed well to avoid traffic jams. Malang City, as a large city in East Java, faces complex traffic problems at the Eng An Kiong Temple intersection, which is busy with activities such as markets, shops and schools. This research uses Vissim simulation and PKJI 2023 analysis to evaluate intersection performance. The results show poor conditions with a high degree of saturation. The proposed solutions are: (1) change the cycle time to 80 seconds with 2 phases, and (2) change the cycle time to 130 seconds with 4 phases. Both alternatives reduce the degree of saturation below 0.85 pcu/hour, with the second alternative being safer. Suggestions for further research are to use the latest regulations and apply the proposed scenarios to improve intersection performance.
