Abstract

This research aims to describe how the method is planned, implemented, and evaluated within the compulsory Qur’an Reading and Writing (BTQ) extracurricular program. A descriptive qualitative approach with a phenomenological design was employed. Primary data were obtained from the Islamic education teacher, the extracurricular instructor, and students through passive participant observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentation, while secondary data were drawn from lesson plans, attendance and assessment records, and supporting literature. Data were analyzed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldána, and credibility was strengthened through source and technique triangulation, researcher persistence, and referential adequacy. The findings show that planning involves standardizing the compulsory BTQ program since 2022, administering a placement test to map students into appropriate levels (jilid), and recruiting certified (syahadah) instructors coordinated through routine briefings. Implementation takes place once a week, on Fridays, for 80 effective minutes, using the classical read-and-listen (talqin) technique that moves from unmelodied tahqiq recitation to four-toned tartil recitation, combined with Arabic handwriting practice and individual remedial guidance for students who struggle. Evaluation is carried out in layers through daily formative scoring (B, C, K), a tiered proficiency test (munaqosyah) with a repetition policy for students who have not mastered the material, and periodic managerial reporting. The method is concluded to be effective in gradually improving students’ reading quality through structured planning, integrative implementation, and continuous evaluation, although it still faces challenges such as students’ fatigue during afternoon sessions, limited individual coaching time, and wide variation in students’ basic reading ability.
