Abstract

Educational developments in the 21st century call for student-centered learning that fosters critical thinking skills, a sense of purpose in learning, and a deeper understanding of the subject matter. One approach used to address these demands is deep learning, which integrates mindful learning, meaningful learning, and joyful learning. As a model school for deep learning implementation, SMAN 4 Malang applies this approach in Islamic Religious Education (PAI) instruction. This study aims to describe and analyze the reasons for selecting deep learning as the foundation for PAI instruction, its implementation, and the outcomes achieved. The study employs a qualitative approach using a case study design. Data were collected through observation, semi-structured interviews with the school principal, the vice principal for curriculum, PAI teachers, and students, as well as document analysis. Data analysis was conducted using the Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña model. The results of the study indicate that deep learning was chosen because it aligns with educational developments and the school’s student-centered vision. Its implementation was carried out through learning reflection, linking course material to real-life situations, and creating an active and enjoyable learning environment. This application resulted in improvements in students’ cognitive, affective, and psychomotor aspects.
