PERAN GURU PENDIDIKAN AGAMA ISLAM DALAM MENINGKATKAN KESADARAN SOSIAL SISWA SEKOLAH MENENGAH ATAS BRAWIJAYA SMART SCHOOL MALANG

Abstract

This comprehensive study aims to deeply analyze the multidimensional role of Islamic Religious Education (PAI) teachers in increasing students' social awareness at Brawijaya Smart School (BSS) Senior High School in Malang. As an educational institution that upholds international standards, SMA BSS faces unique challenges in integrating Islamic spiritual values with the demands of global social competence in a highly heterogeneous socioeconomic environment. Using a qualitative approach with a case study design, this research explores how PAI teachers implement the values of Rahmatan lil 'Alamin in daily learning. Data were collected through participant observation, in-depth unstructured interviews with educators and students, and institutional documentation. The findings indicate that PAI teachers play a strategic role through five main functions: educators, spiritual guides, behavioral role models (qudwah), social motivators, and holistic evaluators. The implementation of moderate Islamic values—such as tawassut (moderation), tasamuh (tolerance), and musawah (equality)—is realized through cooperative pedagogical frameworks and philanthropic programs, notably the "Amal Jumat" cross-subsidy initiative. The implications demonstrate that the integration of religious values significantly increases students' transcendental empathy, reduces antisocial behaviors, and builds a socially resilient and inclusive school climate. This study confirms that religious education is a crucial instrument in shaping citizens who are intellectually intelligent and possess strong social integrity.
