STRATEGI SEKOLAH DALAM MENUMBUHKAN LITERASI MEMBACA SISWA DI MADRASAH IBTIDAIYAH

Abstract


Reading literacy is a fundamental skill that plays an important role in supporting students' learning success. However, low reading literacy remains a challenge faced by many elementary educational institutions. This study aimed to describe school strategies in fostering students' reading literacy, identify the supporting and inhibiting factors in their implementation, and analyze the impact of these strategies on students at Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Nahdlatul Ulama Polowijen. This study employed a qualitative approach with a case study design. Data were collected through observations, interviews, and documentation involving the principal, vice principal for curriculum affairs, teachers, library staff, and students. Data were analyzed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, consisting of data collection, data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings revealed that the school's strategies for fostering reading literacy included reading habituation before learning activities, literacy-based assignments, literacy-based learning through shared reading, discussions and presentations, the active role of teachers in guiding reading activities, structured school library programs, and collaboration with the Malang City Library. Supporting factors included the availability of a well-equipped library and reading corners, adequate learning media, supportive school policies, and parental involvement. Meanwhile, the inhibiting factors were students' lack of discipline in returning library books, low concentration during learning activities, and differences in reading abilities among students. These strategies positively impacted students by improving reading comprehension, reading interest, learning participation, self-confidence, and academic achievement. Therefore, the strategies implemented by the school have successfully fostered a positive and sustainable reading literacy culture.
