PENGARUH MEDIA WHATSAPP DALAM MENINGKATKAN MAHARAH KALAM MAHASISWA PENDIDIKAN BAHASA ARAB UNIVERSITAS ISLAM MALANG

Abstract
Maharah kalam (speaking skill) is one of the Arabic language skills that most determines the success of Arabic Language Education students, as it relates directly to the communicative function of language and to students' readiness as prospective Arabic teachers. However, limited face-to-face time, minimal practice opportunities, and a weak language environment outside the classroom are the main obstacles faced by students of the Arabic Language Education Study Program at Universitas Islam Malang. This study aims to describe the implementation of maharah kalam learning through WhatsApp media and to examine its effect on improving students' maharah kalam. The study employed a quantitative approach with a pre-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design. The sample consisted of 15 students from the 2025 cohort, selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through oral tests, observation, and documentation, then analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics 25 through validity testing, reliability testing, normality testing, and the Paired Sample T-Test. The findings show that learning was implemented in three stages—planning, implementation, and evaluation—utilizing the Group Video Call, Share Screen, and Short Video features. The mean pretest score increased from 69.67 to 83.33 on the posttest. The Paired Sample T-Test showed a significance value (Sig. 2-tailed) of 0.000 (< 0.05), so H0 was rejected and H1 accepted. Thus, the use of WhatsApp Group had a statistically significant positive effect on improving the maharah kalam of Arabic Language Education students at Universitas Islam Malang.
