Abstract

Abstract

Speaking ability (maharah kalam) is one of the essential skills in learning the Arabic language that students need to master. However, in practice, many students at TPQ Al-Kamaliyah Kauman Kepanjen face difficulties in expressing ideas verbally due to a lack of self-confidence, limited vocabulary, and minimal practical training. Therefore, the application of a learning method that can address these challenges and encourage students to participate actively is necessary. One method deemed effective is the role-playing method, which allows students to learn to speak through practicing roles in everyday life contexts. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of the role playing method in improving students’ speaking skills (maharah kalam) at TPQ Al-Kamaliyah Kauman Kepanjen. The research employs a quantitative approach with a one-group pretest posttest design. The sample consisted of 30 fifth-grade students who were given treatment through the implementation of the role playing method in Arabic speaking instruction. Before the treatment, students took a pretest using conventional learning methods. After applying the role playing method, a posttest was administered to measure improvement. Instruments used included oral tests and observation sheets. The analysis results showed a significant improvement, with the average pretest score of 66.2 rising to 80 in the posttest. A paired sample t-test yielded a significance value of 0.000 (p < 0.05), indicating that the role playing method is effective in enhancing students' speaking skills. These findings demonstrate that role playing can be an innovative and enjoyable teaching strategy for Arabic language instruction at the TPQ level. Based on the results, the role playing method proved effective in improving speaking skills (maharah kalam) among TPQ Al-Kamaliyah students. It significantly increased students’ performance from pretest to posttest and helped overcome speaking challenges while making learning more engaging and interactive.
